Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen has filled the position of codes enforcement officer that was left vacant with the recent retirement of Dennis Clark who had held the job for several years.

Dillard Quick, of Walling, was officially hired during the June 7, 2012, meeting of the city board.

Quick graduated from University of Mississippi, in 1994, with a Bachelor of Science degree. He began working with his family in construction and then moved to Tennessee.

He has worked for Brock Construction as a superintendent and then for Hershell Wells, at Cambridge Constructors, as a project manager. In these positions, he built the additions at White County High School and Cassville Elementary, as well as Northfield Elementary School. Quick has also worked as superintendent over the construction of apartment complexes, college campus dormitories in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia. His work in the field of construction and code requirements were an integral part of his job-related experience.

Quick and his wife Wendy Slatten Quick, who is a school teacher, reside in Walling with their three children.

In other business, the board:

• Approved ordinance, on the first reading, to adopt an operating budget for City of Sparta for fiscal year beginning July 1, 2012 and ending June 30, 2013 and adopt the tax rate of $1.05 per $100 of assessed property value

• Approved city recorder’s financial reports

• Authorized purchase of one police pursuit vehicle, which is already a budgeted item, at a cost of $21,139, from Chevrolet of Murfreesboro. The vehicle was purchased under the state contract price, which showed a savings of more than $6,000 from the list prices. According to Sparta Police Chief Jeff Guth, Edd Rogers Chevrolet, in Sparta, is not a participant in the state contract program, which is the reason for not obtaining the vehicle locally.

• Approved the cost for paving YMCA parking lot

• Authorized sale of surplus ladder truck and bucket truck. The bucket truck was inherited from the electric department and is pieced together from a 2000 Freightliner chassis and a 1986 bed/boom assembly previously used by the electric department. The previous truck experienced a malfunction and burned in 2007, after which the Freightliner chassis was purchased and the bed assembly was moved over. The 1963 Ford 350 has been with the street department for an unknown number of years and is severely worn and beyond is usable service life.

Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen meets at 5 p.m., the first and third Thursdays of each month, at Sparta City Hall. The next meeting will be June 21, 2012.
