Celebrating the rich bluegrass heritage of the area, Liberty Square: A Lester Flatt Celebration is the City of Sparta, Tennessee’s annual community event! Held the second Saturday in October, this free event brings in national and international touring bluegrass artists for a full day of music on the main stage placed in front of the historic Oldham Theater. The music honors the legacy of the first generation bluegrass musicians Lester Flatt and Benny Martin who called White county home, as well as Blake Williams and Josh Swift who continue to carry the torch for bluegrass music in Sparta and worldwide. Additionally, local and regional businesses, churches, and civic organizations make up a vendor area of over 100 food and craft booths serving up the best in arts, crafts and food. The event is located downtown on the town square and covers several blocks, drawing a crowd of up to 5000 from surrounding states annually!
